Nerve, a movie all about the choices you make. With an app destroying people’s lives, making them put themselves in danger, Vee sets out not to change the game but finish it. There is so much depth to this film, I cannot tell you how many times I’ve watched it for the techniques and the cinematography alone.

After moving home from art school, and having her dreams slowly disappear, Kit discovers “the store”. Unicorn Store, showing the millennial experience of going after your dreams only to have life screw you over, go back home and have to rebuild you life. An open and honest conversation about sex but with colour coded lists and binders. Very seriously, this movie is more extensive and educational than most sex ed curriculums. — It also brilliantly displays the ‘Madonna/Whore’ complex. Where you’re either the respectable virgin, or the shameful slut. While being a light-hearted comedy, the film covers a lot of hard-hitting feminist ideals, and being made in 2013, was long ahead of it’s time.

While there are many recent feminist movies that deserve love and praise - Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, Little Women, Birds of Prey - there are a lot of films that focus on individual choice, the individual ambition of women choosing to make their own lives.

So let’s start with Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again. Lily James exploring the world, building a life in Greece, just because life is all about what you do with it.

If you watch this movie and don’t immediately want to run away, rebuilt a house, and dance with strangers… who am I kidding, everyone wants that.

For a Disney Princess who is always working and builds her own future, The Princess and the Frog is the best. Don’t get me wrong, Ariel is my princess and I love her, but Tiana was making her dreams come true long before any magic intervened. That os something we need much more of, especially for kids.

Do you know how hard it is to find an action movie where women aren’t treated like sex objects. Mad Max Fury Road is the best exception. So many badass woman, seeking out a better world, making the world better for themselves. No male gaze, minimal romantic subplot, and overthrowing capitalism. At this point, it’s probably the best future we could get.
