Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina

Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina

WARNING: SPOILERS PART 4

It is not an unpopular opinion that the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina finale was a let down to viewers and just kinda… sucked. Particularly disappointing as I personally was on board until about the last five minutes. It really felt like the writers were on their last day, they’d already been paid, and just wanted to wrap it up so they could get an early lunch.

If you have not yet seen Part 4 we follow both Sabrina Spellman and Sabrina Morningstar (her paradox double) through their new lives which have been disturbed by the Eldritch Terrors; 8 different embodiments of human fears, such as darkness (the darkness), rejection (the uninvited) loss of autonomy (the weird), and so on until the void which aims to consume the earth and all other realms. In the final episode, Sabrina Spellman has become host to part of the void and is carrying a power she cannot control as it destroys her. Father Blackwood intends to sacrifice her to bring forth the void, and while he is stopped, Sabrina asks for the sacrifice to take place.

So here we are. Several loved ones have been lost to the void and can only be retrieved in the time it takes for Sabrina to bleed out. But HUZZAH! Everyone is saved, and all the monsters from the season have also been put in the void which has been trapped in Pandora’s box (conveniently). But who cares, everyone has been saved (except Caliban), families are reuniting, until we look back at Sabrina and see it wasn’t done fast enough. Stone-cold and lying on the sacrificial altar covered in her own blood.

Now honestly, I am not against them killing Sabrina. It’s excellent shock value, it ties up the show, it brings everyone else together to honour and grieve her, and death is not the same for witches, they are confirmed to go on to a peaceful, yet nondescript, afterlife. My biggest problem arrives when Nicholas Scratch greets her in the Sweet Hereafter saying he drowned in the Lake of Sorrows. The man who survived torture in Hell and outer space drowned in a lake grieving for his girlfriend. Rather than have her boyfriend meet her in the afterlife we could have had her finally decide to be okay on her own. I do love Nicholas, and I love the idea of them being endgame, but for about 2 minutes in this season, we saw Sabrina decide she needs to figure out her identity without a boy being involved, and then Nick came back and she never truly got the opportunity. Why not have her finally meet and spend time with her parents and have her father reassure her he loved her as a daughter.

I just feel like Netflix needs to be fined 1 million dollars every time they promote suicide. Just don’t promote suicide, why is that hard?

Not to mention they went to all of the trouble to get Sabrina’s body from space and didn’t even use it. Could they not have pulled her soul from one body to the next in the last moment? They have made closer calls before, and it seems strange for them to show that ability when Sabrina didn’t need saving and then not using it when she did.

Mambo Marie also had some level of control over death. She gave Zelda her familiar back, she led the resurrected back to the afterlife, she had a game with death itself. I was really hoping at the very least we would see her greet Sabrina and bring her to her next phase. See her visit Zelda and swear that she would take care of her.

And how cruel of them to break up Zelda and Mambo Marie. They were a perfect relationship. Two incredible, powerful women ruling the church of Hecate together.

And, for my final complaint. Caliban. Abandoned in the void was the husband and beloved of Sabrina Morningstar. I do wonder if he was ever evil or just manipulated by his lust for power. He only sought revenge on the Spellmans after his wife was killed and no one bothered to tell him. Anyone would be mad. At the very least save him and then leave him to Lilith, who is the only acceptable ruler of Hell.

But now, Sabrina is over, (and I hope Riverdale is to follow). And while I will miss them all dearly, unless they plan on rescuing people from heaven, there really is not Part 5. …but I will take a spin-off adventure of the Fright Club visiting the Fae realm. Again, why bring it up if you’re not going to show it to us? It’s just rude.
